New Yorkers are great complainers. We like to bitch and moan. And this is a good thing. Our grumbling keeps us on our toes. We are also intially suspicious of the new-of invasions to our beloved landscpae. When the twin towers of the world trade centre were constructed, many saw them as a blight on the city's famous skyline. Compared with treasures like Empire State Building and The Chrysler Building, they were abominations. Generations later,we mourn their loss not just because of the lives that went down with them, but because they'd  become a part of our spiritual landscape, symbols our sheer brashness, our restless energy, our drive.

What makes New York a true original ,however, is not one building or museum but the sum of it all, including the people. Las Vegas can creat an instant New York on the strip, but it's a fantasy-you need New Yorkers to make New York City. The city ,and the spirit it embodies, just cannot be duplicated .So if you come to New York City come with open mind , see the struggle, happiness and every emotion engraved on the face of every New Yorker. The best way to see New York is to take Downtown Tour + The Deluxe Helicopter Tour .

Sex And The City Hot Spots Tours

Viator

Admit it -- you love to watch "Sex and the City" and always wondered about the amazing places that Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda hang out, shop, eat and live in New York City, right? Wouldn't it be great if you could come to New York City and see all the places -- from Jimmy Choo's (where Carrie buys her shoes) to Magnolia Bakery (home of delicious cupcakes)?

Last week, I went on a "Sex & The City" tour of New York City which highlighted many of the top spots in "Sex & The City." In just three brief hours on a (thankfully) air-conditioned bus, our tour guide, Katie, was able to show us many of the locations where filming is done for "Sex & The City." Stops included Tao where the girls drink and flirt; the Church Around the Corner; O'Neal's Speakeasy where scenes from Scout are taped; and the gallery where Charlotte worked. In addition, Katie pointed out the New York Sports Club where Miranda works out; the area in the West Village where Sarah Jessica Parker lives with Matthew Broderick; Tiffany's, where Charlotte's engagement ring came from and a number of other places along the way.

Katie donned a bright pink boa (which made finding her easy where the tour meets on 59th Street) and was both friendly and knowledgeable. She shared lots of show- and star-related trivia, including the fact that Matthew Broderick turned down the part of Alex P. Keaton on "Family Ties." She also had assorted "Sex & The City" Souvenirs for sale, including horseshoe necklaces, t-shirts and nipple enhancers. Helpful Tips for CitySights NY Hop-on, Hop-off Tours

  • The All Around Tour offers the best value -- two days of transportation on the Uptown and Downtown loops, the Night tour, as well as a Circle Line Harbor Cruise are included for about $12 more than the price of a single day, single tour ticket.
  • There are a few tour guides who aren't as good as the others -- if you get on one of their buses, hop-off and catch the next bus.
  • Bring a sweater or jacket along for the ride. Even when the weather is warm, it will be breezy, and if it's chilly, it will be colder on the bus.
  • All seating is on the top deck of the bus, offering great views, but ideal photo ops are limited, because the bus is often moving.
  • Be aware of the tour schedule -- you can enjoy 15 more minutes inside an attraction rather than waiting for a bus. (Downtown Loop buses run more frequently than the Uptown ones.)
  • Watch out for branches -- especially when traveling near Central Park on the Uptown Tour.
  • These tours are best experienced on a dry day -- while they offer free ponchos, I recommend choosing a day with better weather for your CitySights NY tour.
  • Bus travel will be slowest during rush hours -- 9-10 a.m. and 4-6 p.m.
  • Don't forget your sunblock -- the wind can make you feel cool, but you can still get burned.

The Sopranos Tour - Mafia Style

Are you eagerly awaiting the start of The Sopranos Season 5 of The Sopranos? I know that I'm counting down the days -- it has been quite a while since the finale of Season 4 aired, and I'm definitely needing a Sopranos fix. How are you coping with waiting for the next season of The Sopranos?

Since I'd already watched all three seasons of The Sopranos and I needed some Sopranos, I decided to try out On Location's Sopranos tour. The Sopranos tour began at Bryant Park in midtown Manhattan. Our tour guide was Marc Baron, who has appeared as an extra in a number of episodes of The Sopranos. (He claims he's always dying in episodes and that he was the character who didn't escape when Vesuvio Restaurant was burned down.

As we drove through the Lincoln Tunnel on our way to see the New Jersey shooting locations, just like Tony Soprano does at the beginning of each episode, A3's "Woke Up This Morning" was played over the bus' intercom. Marc shared with us that rumors on the set indicate that many more scenes from Season 4 are filmed in New York City than in previous seasons. It was also pointed out that Tony Soprano (played by James Gandolfini) has yet to appear in a scene in Manhattan (at least in the first three seasons).

Most interior scenes in The Sopranos are filmed at Silvercup Studios in Queens, NY. Silvercup Studios is also where Sex & The City films interior scenes. Shooting locations for The Sopranos that you can see on the tour include AJ's high school, Satriale's, Big Pussy's auto repair shop, the Bada Bing, and the diner where Chris was shot. According to our guide, the tour is not allowed to go to Tony Soprano's house because it is part of a gated community in North Caldwell, New Jersey, that does not welcome tour buses.

Marc had a great deal of knowledge about the cast of The Sopranos. He shared a lot of biographical information about each of the main actors, including James Gandolfini, Lorraine Bracco (Dr. Jennifer Melfi), Edie Falco (Carmela Soprano), and Jamie-Lynn Sigler (Meadow Soprano). Attention to detail was great; Frank Sinatra was often playing through the intercom when Marc wasn't talking. Marc shared some alleged spoilers about Season 4--including an upcoming funeral--and was able to share lots of information about cast personalities. At the New Jersey pickup/drop off location, members of the tour could even meet Joe Gannascoli, who plays Vito Spatafore, who kills Jackie Jr. at the end of Season 3.

New York TV and Movie Sites Tour

It can be difficult to find activities for your trip to New York City that will entertain and accommodate everyone in your group, but the New York TV and Movie Tour might just do that. This three-hour tour leaves from Ellen's Stardust Diner and takes participants on a luxury tour bus to see over 60 locations used in TV shows and movies filmed in Manhattan. One of the best features of the tour is that the bus has television screens where they show the scenes featuring the locations you're seeing in real life. This is great for those with dusty memories and also highlights some of the movie magic that takes place when filming.

For both children and adults who need a break from walking, this tour offers a welcome respite and the opportunity to see a vast area of Manhattan in just a few hours, covering much of the Manhattan's West Side, from the Upper West Side to Greenwich Village. It's also an excellent choice when the weather is too hot, too cold or too wet for spending extended periods of time outdoors, as most of the tour is spent on the bus.

Our tour guide, Kimberly, was friendly and knowledgeable. I was surprised to learn that New York has a $5 billon film industry and that over 200 movies have been filmed in New York City's Central Park. Despite occasional traffic, she kept the tour engaging with the movie clips, a trivia contest and by pointing out many celebrity homes along the tour. The New York TV and Movie Tour is a great choice for families with children, as there are several stops where they can get off to see the locations up close, though it might exceed the attention span of younger kids. The only disappointment was that the tour was slanted toward heavy coverage of some less important New York City films -- we were surprised that Big Daddy, Serendipity and MIB II were brought up repeatedly while other major New York City movies, including Superman, Taxi Driver and When Harry Met Sally were mentioned only briefly.

Some of the Movies and TV Shows included in the tour

  • Affair to Remember

  • Godzilla

Help your feet... go by bus !”

A second trip to New York, we decided to get our bearings again and save our feet by taking one of the New York Sightseeing Tours. We opted for the Citysights NY tours (blue buses). There are ticket agents dotted all over manhatten. Most of the buses are open-topped (so not really ideal in Winter - although I believe some buses have canopies for the colder months)! There is a tour guide on the bus who will point out all the various points of interest etc etc - just a tip - try and sit near to the guide. We went on a couple of buses where the speakers weren't working properly, so couldn't hear a thing!! The beauty of these buses is that not only do you get a guided tour of the city, but you can hop on and off as much as you please. This enables you to skip the areas you're not interested in, but then can get off at a point of interest - spend as much time there as you want, then hop onto another bus later.
We opted for the 3 day pass which consisted of an uptown and downtown tour. The pass cost approx $80 for adults. What made this tour such good value was all the extras that are included. In addition to the Downtown and Uptown Manhatten (inc Harlem) Tours, it also includes:
Night Tour
Brooklyn Tour
Free admission To Museum of the City of New York
Circle Line 75min Harbor Cruise around Manhatten Island
Ticket To Statue of Liberty / Ellis Island by Ferry
Ticket To Top of the Rock Observation Deck OR Empire State Building Observation Deck (you get to choose which you want).
The Downtown and Uptown tours each lasts for about 2 and a half hours.
If you were to purchase tickets for these attractions separately, that alone would no doubt cost you more than $80 plus we had the freedom to travel the city and get on and off as much as we wanted - very handy when carrying lots of shopping!!!
The Main starting points are dotted between 46th and 50th.

There is another tour company with Red Buses - not quite sure if there is any difference, but we were very pleased with the Blue buses (apart from the dodgy speaker systems)!!

On our trip to New York City we choose the Blue city sights ny tour bus. We bought the super tour for $75 each (this was an online deal) a friend of mine says if you wait and get them in New York you might be able to haggle for a better deal. We loved the tour. We had 4 tour bus tours. Uptown, downtown, Brooklyn and a night tour. We also got tickets to the top of the Rock(The best place to see the City). We got a ticket to the ferry to Ellis Island and the Statue Of Liberty island. It was a flex ticket so we had to wait in a separate line for a reserved spot. We took the subway to battery park to catch the first ferry and we had no problem getting on. It is harder later on in the day. You can take the tour bus to the ferry dock, but the tour bus will not get you there in time for the first ferry. We also got a ticket for a 75 minute harbor tour and a couple of museums that we did not do because we ran out of time. It was a good deal and we got to see alot of the city. The Brooklyn tour and the night tour had very good tour guides.
